My Journey Into Clean Beauty

Back in 2012 when I became pregnant with my first child, I was determined to live the cleanest, most nourishing lifestyle so that my family would live a happy and healthy life.  I focused mostly on physical health and clean eating, thinking I had it covered.

All the while, I was still using fragrance filled baby care items, chemically toxic cleaning products and room deodorizers. My daughter would have some crazy skin irritations that only steroid creams would cure… that’s when I dove deeper. Here is what I learned…

  • The last time the United States Congress passed any law regulation on the safety of personal care products was in 1938 (Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act).
  • In the past 80+ years, tens of thousands of chemicals/ingredients have been introduced and included in personal care products from cosmetics, skin care, hair care and perfume.
  • The European Union bans about 1,300 ingredients from personal care products and the United States only bans 11. That’s right, eleven!
  • With little to no testing, the FDA allows chemicals into our personal care products that are known toxins, endocrine disrupters (hormone disrupters), reproductive disrupters, organ function disrupters and carcinogens.

Bottom line:

Тhe products we use on ourselves and families to make us clean & pretty, are actually really harmful to our health.

My research led me to try and find as many brands that did not include ingredients that are known to be toxic or harmful to our health. In 2019, Clean Beauty became the core of my focus as a professional makeup artist.

Inspired by the words of Gandhi, “Be the change you want to see in this world” – I decided to be part of the change to help people understand that beauty shouldn’t come at the cost of becoming sick or worse…damaging your hormones.

My definition of Clean Beauty

Clean beauty utilizes natural materials with safe ingredients backed by a standard that ensures attentive evaluation. The clean beauty standards consider human and environmental health, using a nontoxic element as a baseline and plant-based ingredients for active results. This combination makes it safer for people and the planet.

Clean beauty companies are very transparent with their labeling of ingredients.  Clean beauty is likened to the idea of clean eating, where the focus is on organic, plant-based and whole foods that deliver a healthy digestive and immune system, while avoiding processed foods as much as possible. Clean beauty holistically supports an overall clean lifestyle. And the benefits can be nothing short of amazing.

In my kit you will still find conventional beauty products as they still have a place and need. Now you will also find a full kit of Clean Beauty brands and products that are all found to be non-toxic ensuring that you will look your best self while being the healthiest YOU!

I’m often asked: “Does this mean I should ditch all of my conventional beauty and replace it with clean beauty?”

Well, this is subjective and based on many personal variables. I strongly believe the best place to start is try using clean beauty products for your everyday cosmetics, hair care, perfume and other personal care products. Also, it’s wise to use clean beauty on the largest surfaces of the body: i.e. body lotion, skin care, foundation and hair care.

If you use clean beauty daily and reserve conventional beauty for special occasions, you will be better off.

Think of it this way: if you eat a clean organic diet daily, the random day loaded with simple carbs and sugar won’t affect you nearly as much in the big picture.

In terms of makeup, foundation, mascara and lipstick are loyalty items that most people in North America wear on a daily basis.  It would be best to start here too, considering the average person in North America wears the same foundation formula for 6 years before considering making the switch to another brand/formula. Not to mention, you actually ingest lipstick since it stays on your lips.
